The Red Door was tucked away in an alley in a little corner of Baltimore, where the neon sign flickered like it was still figuring out whether it was worth the electricity. The paint was chipped and the once revered crimson door could barely stay on its hinges. The place was a relic--booths sticky from years of spilled beer, a jukebox that had seen better days, and gruff men who had long abandoned the idea of being smooth.
It was the kind of place that women rarely patronized and when they did wander in it was usually a last-ditch effort to find something that didn't smell like old cooking grease. But when the women did come in it was definitely a welcomed surprise. The men didn't seem to mind though, they kind of welcomed the mix of something new, even if they didn't know how to handle it.
Women just moved differently, always carried themselves with an air of confidence. Most of them came in pairs, some alone, but all of them had a certain air about them--like they knew the magic that this place held. The men were just not aware enough to notice. So it wasn't the drinks that drew the ladies in, although they did help.
This particular Friday evening a tall, curvy, mysterious looking woman happened in. She pushed the old rickety door open and the hum of the conversations almost dropped to near silence. She gracefully and purposefully walked over to the bar to have a seat.
She locked eyes with the bartender and in a low but direct tone said, "Something for the ladies."
The bartender stopped in his tracks not because he was stumped by the order, but mesmerized by the tone. It was confident and demanding, almost provocative even. This woman wasn't just asking for a drink, she was staking a claim.
The bartender cleared his throat and said, "you know, we don't do specialty drinks here."
"I'm not asking for a special drink, " she said cutting him off. She leaned closer to him, deliberately letting her fingers caress the bar. "I'm asking for something that will make the night feel like it's just starting."
